Bikini Competitor Confessions - Amenorrhea in Athletic Women

So I was extremely hesitant about posting this... but, this subject has been weighing very heavily on my heart for quite some time.  To be honest, I have had many sleepless nights and I can't even count the amount of times I have cried over what I'm about to talk about.

If you're reading this, you're most likely a family member, a dear friend, or an amazing #fitfam friend from around the world.  Let me begin by thanking each and every one of your for joining me on my health & fitness journey.  THANK YOU!!!

As you may already know, it all began about two years ago when I started training for my first NPC Bikini Competition.  During the process of preparing for my show, I fell in love with working out and eating clean, whole foods.  I enjoyed learning new exercises and educating myself on nutrition and how cohesively; they affect your body in ways I hadn't even imagined.  I loved watching my body change and became hungry for results.  I wanted to be better, do better, look better, and at some point, nothing else mattered other than "self improvement".

Well, the problem was I had lost sight of my overall health.  Most people look at fitness models with wide eyes and admire them for their amazing physiques.  The fact is, most people also do not realize the huge amount of hard work and effort that is put forth day in and day out in order to achieve a show or photoshoot ready physique.

I began training for my first show the beginning of 2012.  I ended up loosing my menstrual cycle about a month or two into prep.  The absence of menstruation is also known as Amenorrhea (un-men-oREE-uh).  (Sorry to any fellas reading this, but I really think this issue needs to be addressed!) lol.  At first I was actually excited about not receiving my "monthly gift".  I mean really ladies, who wouldn't be?!  But, after ending prep and taking some time off in between shows, Aunt Flow didn't come back to visit...

I gave it some more time though, and then eventually decided to compete again in 2013 with no sign of my menstrual cycle.  I kind of just brushed the whole situation to the side because I had my sights set on my goals I had established and nothing was going to get in my way of achieving them.

Finally though, something clicked.  Probably from the continuous love, support, and advice from my family that I needed to RELAX.  I didn't want to stop, but I knew I needed to.  It's funny because so many people admire competitors; desiring a shredded six pack or overall lean body.  But, the fact is, stepping on stage at less than 10% body fat is when a bodybuilder is at his/her weakest.  You really think someone can push their maximum weight in the gym when they are in a caloric deficit?  Most likely not!

Anyways,  I decided to give myself and my body a break.  Sometimes, the right thing and the hardest thing are the same.  I cut back my gym sessions, and I slowly began to increase my calories.  I was so afraid that I was just going to blow up and gain massive amounts of fat everywhere.  The process has (and is STILL) hard for me some days.

After a couple of months off (my last show was in April of 2013) I still wasn't getting my period.  So, I finally decided to go to the doctors.  In fact, I went to numerous doctors, tried a variety of treatments, and still, nothing seemed to be working.  I actually almost gave up, thinking I would never be "normal" again and even considered prepping for another show.  But something my amazing OB/GYN said to me stuck.  She said, "Candy, I know this is something you are passionate about, but it's not healthy for you.  Think about it, do you want a few more years to pass by, maybe you'll be in a relationship, married, and wanting to start a family and you won't be able to.  What do you really want?  Do you want to have a bunch of plastic trophies or do you want to be able to have children?"

That hit me hard.  Like a ton of bricks actually.  But, it really helped me put things into perspective.  I want to be healthy.  I do want a family (one day, down the line, far far away) lol.  I think what most women fail to realize (myself included) is that if you let these types of hormonal issues go for too long... the side effects can become irreversible.  Now obviously I am not a doctor, but I have been to quite a few, and I have done A LOT of research and have educated myself fairly well on this topic.  And yes, there are many women who are capable of competing and maintaining a low body fat percentage and never loose their menstrual cycle.  But I believe there are far more women who have had problems than those who haven't.  I know numerous ladies who have shared with me their stories about dealing with this same problem.  So please know, that if you do as well YOU ARE NOT ALONE :)

At first I thought it would be kind of embarrassing talking about something so personal.  But, I think today (Mother's Day) made me realize that I needed to share my story.  I'm still in the process of trying to regulate my hormone levels, so I'm not 100% there but I am on my way.  I want to promote a healthy, active, and fit lifestyle.  But health starts from the inside.  I am not trying to discourage anyone from competing because I am so happy and proud of myself for doing so, and maybe I will step on stage again one day.  As for now though, there are so many other things I have my sights set on.  School, work, family, friends, etc. BALANCE is key.

So yes, push yourself, work hard, and remain dedicated, but please don't become so engrossed in creating a "better you" that you compromise your health!  Train smart and eat a healthy, nutritious, balanced diet.  Know that your self worth should not be associated with numbers; whether it be on a scale, body fat, macros, or even your personal bests.  You should love yourself every single day regardless of what stage you're at in your journey.

Life is TOO SHORT and TOO PRECIOUS to not appreciate what God has blessed you with.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, which was pretty difficult for me to write.  I hope that if you're a woman struggling with the same or similar issues, you seek help like I did.  I have provided a few links below if you'd like to educate yourself a little more about the topic.  I also hope that you take a step back and reevaluate your priorities.

No one's life is perfect.  You may think it is from what people choose to edit and post and share on social media.  But no matter who you are, everyone has their own issues, and I really believe that we are all in this together <3  Don't be so hard on yourself or others!

So stay positive, don't stop smiling, never give up, be happy and share that happiness, live well, and God bless!

xo Candy

Bikini Competition Checklist

Hi fit fam!  Sorry I haven't updated my blog recently, I have been so focused on preparing for my competition I have had such little spare time!  I'm just 2 days out from my first show of the year and my third one to date, the 2013 NPC Diamond Classic!  I'm very excited because this was the first show I ever competed in and I can't wait to step back on stage.  I'm feeling confident about where my body is at, my goal was to gain some good quality muscle and come in a little leaner this time around and I believe I have achieved that!

Any who, I was just sitting here racking my brain, putting together a long list of the numerous things I will need to have with me on my big day.  Then I thought, hey, why don't I share it with my fellow fitties.  So here ya go :)

Candy's Bikini Competition Checklist
  1. Competition Swimwear - Clearly the most important item to bring with you!  Competition swimwear is all about glitz and glam.  Most girls get their bikinis custom made so it fits absolutely perfectly.  I have my suits designed by Ravish Sands (click for a link to their website).  But, custom suits can be quite pricey.  Show stopping swimwear can range anywhere from $150-$600 depending on the fabric, connectors, and the amount of rhinestones you choose (You can refer to my past article about the cost of competing).  In addition, I always bring a "backup" swimsuit just in case!  What happens if a connector breaks or your spray tan ruins your suit?  You can't waltz out on the stage naked for Pete's sake!  Lol!  It's always good to have a plan B ;)
  2. Competition Shoes - Or as I like to call them "stripper shoes" haha!  They are clear heels which are no more than 5 inches high, some prefer an ankle strap (I do) and others choose to wear strapless.  These are the standard shoes for bikini competitors.  Make sure you practice, practice, practice your walking and posing in your shoes beforehand!
  3. Competition Jewelry - Like you don't have enough bling already, let's add some more! It's safe to say that every single bikini competitor wears some sort of jewelry to complete their total package.  Whether it be earrings, bracelets, rings, or all of the above, bikini competitions are very showy so the more sparkle and shine the better, just make sure it's not so big and bulky that it is distracting from your physique which should always be the main focus.
  4. Beauty Products - As the song goes... "Nails done, hair done, everything did!"  You want to be fancy hun! LOL (that's my little remix).  I prefer to get my hair and makeup done professionally for shows because for me, that is just one less thing I will have to do or stress about.  I always get my makeup done by MUA Katie Levine (click to view her portfolio) we chat and I can just sit back and relax!  But, not everyone feels the same and would rather do it themselves.  If that is the case for you, then I highly recommend you PRACTICE your STAGE makeup ahead of time.  Remember: Stage makeup is completely different from every day makeup or even what you wear to go out.  You will be tan, REALLY TAN, like an oompa loompa.  No, really.  So, you will have to purchase very dark foundation in order to match your spray tan. Don't forget to bring your makeup bag along for any touch ups.  Also, a blow dryer, curling iron, or straightener if needed.  Various items such as a mirror, q-tips, hair spray, false lashes, press on nails, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, make up remover, towels, a small sewing kit, scissors, hair bands, bobby pins, and safety pins are also great to have on hand!
  5. Tanning Products - I always use Pro Tan Competition Tanner (click for a link to their website).  I recommend purchasing their bikini ready package so you will have all the products you need for flawless competition color.  This includes Bikini Bite which makes sure your suit stays in place while you are walking and posing and Muscle Sheen which accentuates your muscle tone on stage.  Don't forget to bring these along with their applicators to the show!
  6. Comfy Clothes - Make sure you wear loose fitting clothes (I suggest a robe or a jump suit) so you have less of a chance of your tanner rubbing off or your hair and makeup getting messed up.  Also, make sure you have a pair of flip flops or even slippers to lounge around in backstage because you sure don't want to be in heels all day.  If you are planning to go out after the competition to celebrate, pack a cute outfit for that as well.
  7. FOOD & Water - You're going to need to eat of course!  So, make sure you have your meals packed and ready to go the night prior.  I always like to carry my pink 6 Pack Bag with me where ever I go so I never miss a meal!  Typical backstage snacks are rice cakes and all natural nut butters.  Yum!
  8. Reading Material and/or Music - It's smart to bring a book, magazine, or your IPod (don't forget the charger) to help you relax or get in the zone.
  9. Camera - Most people use their phone now a days (again, remember your charger) but it's nice to have a camera to document your experience!  Beat backstage boredom by socializing with the other competitors and take plenty of pictures.  Don't be anti-social and have an "in it to win it" attitude because that's just no fun!
  10. Wallet - Don't forget to bring some extra cash, business cards, your membership card, the contest entry form, and of course your ID.
  11. Exercise Bands - Don't assume they will provide weights backstage to pump up with, bring some bands to get your pump on.

  12. A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND YOUR SUPER SMILE! :)

I really hope this list helps you prepare for your big day!  I'm so excited for mine!!!  Don't forget to invite your family and friends to come cheer you on and see you shine.  If you happen to think of any other necessities that I may have forgotten feel free to let me know so I can share them with others.

Remember, it's all about being the best YOU that you can be!   We all should empower and support each other to be healthy and live a fit life :)
Good luck & God bless! <3

Bodybuilding Competition Considerations - Advice from Fitness Model & NPC Bikini Competitor Candy Brenn

Are you thinking about competing in a bodybuilding, fitness, figure, or bikini competition?  Find out from NPC Bikini Competitor Candy Brenn exactly what it takes to prepare for your competition!

Besides healthy eating and fitness tips, some of the most frequently asked questions I receive are in regards to competing.  With competition season just beginning, I thought it would be a great idea to share with you some of my personal thoughts on things you should consider before committing to a bodybuilding competition.

First off, let me explain to you that there are various categories for men and women when it comes to competing.  There’s traditional bodybuilding in which female bodybuilders try to add lean muscle mass much like male bodybuilders, with very little body fat.  Then there is the fitness category where competitors perform an athletic routine set to music to showcase their strength, flexibility and any gymnastics training.  Next we have figure competitors who have the same type of physique as fitness competitors, but there is no fitness routine. Competitors wear a two-piece swimsuit and heels, and are judged from all angles.  While bearing a close resemblance to female bodybuilding, they emphasizes muscle tone over muscle size.

Lastly, we have the bikini division; this is the newest category and the one which I chose to compete in.  Bikini competitors are still very lean, but do not carry the same muscle definition that bodybuilders, fitness, and figure competitors aim for.  It is a softer look, and competitors are judged in a smaller two-piece swimsuit and high heels. I believe that there is an emphasis on having a well developed “bikini booty” with strong shoulders and a small waist.  Judges compare based on balance and poise, as well as overall physical appearance.

So now that we got the categories covered, that may help you decide which one is best for you and your body!

Now, I’m not going to sit here and try to convince you or deter you from competing, what I am going to do is be real with you.  Many people begin contest prep with absolutely NO IDEA how much hard work it really is.  A bodybuilding or bikini body does not simply just happen over night.  There is no pill or “quick fix” to achieving a ripped and rock hard body.  Truth is, it takes months of dedication to a strict diet and training regimen that is going to test you not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.

That being said, let me explain to you more in depth what to expect when preparing for a competition.

Positive Mindset
As I said before, competition prep is no walk in the park.  Regardless of what category you choose to compete in, all require consistent clean eating and taxing training in order to yield a stage worthy physique.  This can and will take a toll on you physically, mentally, and emotionally.  Some days you will feel stronger than an ox and others you may feel weaker than a tiny twig.  You’ll get grumpy, angry, frustrated, sad, annoyed, tired, and heck you’ll feel like giving up once, twice, maybe more.  But then, there are days you are full of joy because you see just what you want, PROGRESS.  You get in what you put out and those results make you feel amazing!  You will feel crazy at times because you’re experiencing a roller coaster of emotions.  These feelings will not only affect you, but the people around you.

Support System
Through out your show prep, you will need to surround yourself with people who are going to support and encourage you.  A crucial aspect of competing is finding the right trainer to help you prepare.  It’s extremely difficult to do it all on your own.  Without proper guidance from a certified trainer who is experienced in competition preparation, you most likely fall short in achieving an award-winning physique.

Me with my trophy and my trainers, Elena Ramos & Dennis Sheppard!

Furthermore, you will have to associate only with those who are going to lift you up!  You may find that your co-workers, friends, even family members cannot comprehend your choices and could quite possible be negative influences because they are unable to relate to your competition lifestyle.

Time Management
FACT: The majority of your time will be spent focusing on your diet and training.  We all have the same 24 hours in a day and must use them wisely.  Most of us work and/or go to school full time, so there goes 40+ hours a week already.  But if you are serious about competing and have your sights set on a goal, you will have to figure out how to make it work.  You will have to plan your life around your training and eating schedule.  It is not impossible, and it can certainly be done, you just have to find out what works best for you.

During your prep you may find that you begin distancing yourself from family and friends.  This detachment may cause your loved ones to feel hurt or rejected because you’re unable to spend as much time with them.  You will have to give up late night partying, drinking, dinners, and possibly forgo certain social events due to your diet and training regimen.

Competition Costs
Have you considered the costs of competing?  Here is a list of just some of the things you will have to purchase:
-         Posing Coach
-         Clean FOOD
-         Supplements
-         Gym Gear
-         Competition Swimsuit
-         Competition Shoes
-         Competition Jewelry
-         Tanning Products
-         Hair & Makeup
-         Registration & Show Entry Fees
-         More FOOD (lol!)

Now, I don’t want all this to discourage you!  I want you to be aware of the various expenses and informing you that these things can add up quickly.  Be prepared and start saving your money now.  You can have a yard sale, bake sale, or even set up a fundraiser to raise money for your journey!

Also, you can look into sponsorships to cut costs.  I am blessed to work for the number one sports nutrition and supplement company, VPX Sports / Redline Energy!  And, I am sponsored by ProTan Competition Tanning!  It may not be feasible to obtain sponsorships for your first competition because companies generally want to represent someone with more experience.  As for me, I have competed in two shows and placed first in my class in both.  Currently, I'm preparing for my third show!

Placing first in my class at The 2012 Diamond Classic

Success
So why do I do it?  I do it because I love the sport!  It takes dedication, determination, and consistency to showcase the best YOU that you can possibly be.

Keep in mind that it isn't all about winning!  You have no control over the judges opinions or who shows up to compete against you (WARNING: This sport can be very political).  Regardless of your scoring or placing you should be extremely proud of yourself for committing to months of preparation, stepping on that stage, and giving it all you got.  Your body is your trophy!

I welcome the challenge on my body and mind although it can be grueling.  Realize that success requires sacrifice.  I like to push myself and I love seeing my body progress from week to week.  Are you ready to test yourself?  Make sure your physically and mentally prepared (I recommend consulting with a licensed doctor prior to any contest prep) and if you are, I say GO FOR IT!
